Giant Veggie Patch

South Ribble Borough Council's Regeneration team has upgraded an area of derelict and under-used land in Broadfields, Leyland to start a community food growing project producing fresh organically grown produce.

In the current economic climate with food prices on the increase, interest in food growing has never been higher. With current provision limited, the Council has seen a significant increase in waiting lists together with a number of local schools and community groups wanting areas to undertake their own eco-activities.
The Giant Veggie Patch invites local people to try their hand at growing their own food on site and support them as they transfer these skills into their own gardens and facilities. By using recycled materials and locally sourced green waste compost, the scheme demonstrates the value of recycling, composting and gives people working examples of how to turn waste into resources.
The Giant Veggie Patch also offers training and skill sessions for those who are looking to participate in food growing activities. These may include cookery classes, gardening advice, recycling workshops and composting events.
